We provide opportunities for writing bachelor theses on various topics in Economics of Innovation, International Trade, Applied Microeconomics, and Industrial Organization.

We will accept applications for bachelor theses in the winter term 2017/2018 between August 30th and October 1st 2017.

If your application is accepted you should plan to take part in our bachelor seminar from October 10th 2017 onwards. For further information on the bachelor seminar and bachelor theses please see the PDF syllabus.

If you are interested in applying, please take into account the following information:

(1) Typically, we offer topics that are well suited for acquiring a profound understanding of state-of-the-art empirical research in economics. Examples of topics in previous terms are:

  • “The Collapse of the Soviet Union and Knowledge Production in the United States”
  • “The Effects of the TRIPS-Agreement (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) on Innovation”
  • “Information Technology, Innovation and Productivity – Empirical Evidence from the US Valve-Industry”
  • “Causal Effects of Patent Grants on Follow-on Innovation and Product Development”
  • “The Effect of High-Skilled Immigrants on the Productivity of Natives in the USA”

(2) Participation in at least one of the following bachelor courses is highly recommended:

  • Internationale Ökonomik or International Economics
  • Aufbaumodul Mikroökonomik or Industrieökonomik und Wettbewerb or Economics of Strategy
  • Wirtschaftspolitik II or Labor Economics

In addition, basic knowledge in statistics (courses: „Basis- and Aufbaumodul Statistik“ or „Beschreibende Statistik und Wirtschaftsstatistik“ and „Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und schließende Statistik“) and econometrics (courses: „Angewandte Ökonometrie“ or „Aufbaumodul Ökonometrie“) is strongly recommended.

(3) You can write your thesis in German or English. Please see the “Prüfungsordnung” relevant to you for further administrative details.

(4) If you are interested in writing your bachelor thesis with us, please contact  Christoph Wigger (wigger(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de), submitting your CV, your academic transcripts (high-school diploma, current B.Sc. transcript), as well as a brief statement of your major fields of interest. Please send these documents by email with one pdf-attachment only, including information on the "Prüfungsordnung" relevant to you. Note that we will not be able to deal with incomplete applications.
