We provide opportunities for writing bachelor theses on current research topics in the fields “Economics of Innovation“, “International Economics“, “Industrial Economics“, or “Applied Microeconometrics“. The topics are chosen such that candidates can acquire a profound understanding of state-of-the-art empirical research in one of the research fields we are working in. In particular, we offer options for evaluating empirical identification strategies and for working out bachelor theses with adequate scientific rigor.

If you are interested in writing your bachelor thesis under the supervision of the team of Professor Dr. Susanne Prantl, please note the following:

1. Feel free to hand in your application for writing your thesis after October 2024 before the next deadline for submission, that is at the latest on October 4, 2024.
2. If you want to apply, please contact Professor Dr. Susanne Prantl, submitting your CV, academic transcripts (high-school diploma, current B.Sc. transcript of records) and a concise statement of your major fields of study. Please combine all these documents in one single pdf-attachment and hand it in by e-mail to prantl(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de. Note that we will not be able to deal with incomplete submissions.
3. Please be aware of the fact that capacity restrictions may prevent us from supervising all applicants. Note as well that we have no capacity left up to October 2024. The candidates who we can supervise will be provided with a topic for writing a bachelor thesis at the latest on October 10, 2024.
4. Good knowledge in statistics and econometrics is required. Participation in at least two of the following bachelor courses is highly recommended:
   • Internationale Ökonomik or International Economics,
   • Mikroökonomik II,
   • Angewandte Ökonometrie, or
   • Schwerpunktmodul Quantitative Methoden der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften
5. Candidates can write their thesis either in English or German. Please follow the rules of the “Prüfungsordnung“ relevant to you. If necessary, contact the relevant “Prüfungsamt” for further administrative details.
6. Applying students who have not yet completed one of the bachelor seminars meant to prepare students for writing a thesis should let us know as soon as possible. If you are accepted as a candidate for writing your bachelor thesis under our supervision, we will support you in finding a suitable option for participating in a bachelor seminar.

3. Bitte beachten Sie, dass wir aufgrund von Kapazitätsbeschränkungen möglicherweise nicht alle Bewerber.innen betreuen können. Beachten Sie auch, dass wir bis Oktober 2024 keine freien Kapazitäten mehr haben. Den Bewerber.innen, die wir betreuen können, werden wir spätestens am 10. Oktober 2024 ein Thema anbieten.
4. Gute Kenntnisse in Statistik und Ökonometrie werden vorausgesetzt. Die Teilnahme an mindestens zwei Kursen der folgenden Liste wird besonders empfohlen:

   • Mikroökonomik II,
   • Angewandte Ökonometrie oder
   • Schwerpunktmodul Quantitative Methoden der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften
5. Sie können Ihre Bachelorarbeit entweder in deutscher oder in englischer Sprache verfassen. Bitte beachten Sie die Regelungen der für Sie relevanten Prüfungsordnung. Falls nötig, kontaktieren Sie bitte das für Sie zuständige Prüfungsamt, um weitere administrative Informationen einzuholen.
6. Bewerber.innen, die noch kein Bachelorseminar zur Vorbereitung auf das Verfassen von Abschlussarbeiten absolviert haben, sollten uns schnellstmöglich informieren. Wenn Sie eine Betreuungszusage für eine Bachelorarbeit mit Betreuung durch uns erhalten, werden wir Ihnen dabei behilflich sein, eine geeignete Option zur Teilnahme an einem Bachelorseminar zu finden.
